Claims and Farm Life

Like most business owners I struggle with getting people to find Surfing Goat Soaps on the web, or in the real world. Whenever I ask AI for suggestions, no matter what form AI I use, I always get the following guidance.

“Use SEO words such as enriching, moisturizing, good for sensitive skin,” and other words that will endanger my farm and business if I use them.  Despite explaining AI that those words should not be included in their suggestions, I just synonyms for them.

I see a lot of soapmakers make claims like “ great for sensitive skin,”  “perfect for eczema,” “skin lightening,” and other  promises. I recently saw “age defying,” as one claim.  These are the very words that someone else’s AI is going to pick up and relay that information to the FDA.

I love it when I get reviews from customers, because I can share their comments, as long as I make a disclaimer.  I see YouTubers pitching their products making those claims, but I’m not willing to risk my farm and my family’s safety in order to make that sale.

One of the reasons I started Caprenity was because I wanted to find a way to inform people about their actions, and how that effects nature.  Since animals can’t talk, in Caprenity they can, in a way.  I am also trying to use the stories to get people to see how they get their food, or how to prepare it.

There is so much that people have forgotten, and I want Surfing Goat Soaps to help bridge that gap so people can make wiser choices.  I spoke earlier about a recent meeting I went to where people were requesting that dogs be “silenced” after 9 p.m.  I was among dozens of farmers who were there to support the farm in question. When the plaintiff said they’d like the quiet to start at 7 p.m. because that’s when their baby goes down for the night, there was a mutter throughout the room.

Predators don’t punch a clock, as I said in my previous video.  Births happen in the middle of the night, as do burglars. Though many of us do use wildlife cams, a Ring camera can’t fill the gap that a farm dog performs.

For example, many years ago my first English Shepherd was put to work in a way that I never thought I would ask of her.  The previous night our barn was visited by a fisher, a large member of the weasel family.  The animal came back twice in one night, killing a total of eight chickens.  Weasels kill for sport, not just for hunger.  The fisher left all the bodies behind, so we could tell exactly what happened to them. We could even see where our little rooster, Blanc, tried to protect a hen, by putting himself between the fisher and the hen.

If we’d had a livestock guardian dog in the barn, chances are that fisher would never have tried to enter the barn. But we didn’t, so the next night, we went out to do evening chores, as we do every night.  When I opened the back door, there was the fisher, sitting boldly about six feet away, looking directly at me as if to say “get out of my way.”  He was not afraid at all.

I retrieved Fynn from the house, told her to “Make him go away girl.  Come back though, and don’t come back bloody.”  She chased him off, came right back within 15 minutes, with out a scratch on her.  He never returned.

Now we have Lea, and before her we had Pippi, both of whom live in the barn with the goats.  Each of them weigh(ed) more than 100 lbs, and while they are usually loving marshmallows, we can always tell when there is a real danger.  Lea’s voice drops an octave.  There is a definite attitude change.  We don’t usually hear that bark, because her regular barking keeps things away, but if one is foolish enough to come close, like a coyote I saw last year, they meet more than a warning. They are met with a very large iceberg with teeth.

What does this have to do with soap?  Well, we can’t separate farm from soap here. The choices we make for the soap effects the herd, and vice versa.  So, while I can’t make claims, I try to use Caprenity and the soaps to illuminate the issues that small farms face.

Your choice of purchasing a Surfing Goat Soap brings that vigilance to your skin. Our small batches make it possible for us to ensure a high quality for you.  I can’t make claims about health benefits, but I can make claims about how environmentally friendly our soaps are. I hope you understand that when you shop from us. We want our customers to be part of our farm family and we care about them as much as we do about our goats, dogs, cats or horse.  Treating you well is critically important to us, and while I can’t make claims that AI care about, I know it’s something that you care about. And I thank you for that care and your choices. Thank you.
