Soaps Meet Scents

Surfing Goat Soaps uses only natural scents in our soaps. That means essential oils or honey.  Why? Because we have such high quality milk in our product we feel it would be wrong to add chemicals to it.

Our soaps have a gentle scent. I remember my mother who couldn’t got into a candle store because the scent was too strong for her. It gave her a terrible headache. So, we keep our scents subtle, just enough to remind you of where it came from, but not so much that it battles with other scents.

This means citrus soaps are difficult for us. The science of soap doesn’t like the scents of citrus, so it drowns it out.  There are safety limits as to how much essential oil we can use in a batch, and to make citrus survive, we would have to enter the “danger zone.”  But we do make Lemongrass and Lemon Eucalyptus, as well as a rare Jasmine or Gardenia.  Floral are temperamental too, so we only use them occasionally, but they are available by special order.

We tend to group our scents by family – The Patchoulis, The Mints, The Lemons, The Florals, the Woodsy, and and then there are the Unscenteds. We do make two different honey scented soaps, Sweet Unscented and Honey Oatmeal, so people with sensitivities can have a gentle fragrance without inflaming their systems. We are always trying new combinations, so it’s worth coming back to see what we’re up to.  Our molded menagerie soaps are also scented, slightly, but we let them tell their story visually.

For those who think our menagerie is “too pretty to use,” think of them as an environmental art piece. You enjoy with your eyes, then give it to your skin, and then as a gift to the Earth, there is nothing to throw away.
